WeCan Scholarship Presentation Ceremony 2018/19 was held on 8 December 2018 at Lecture Theatre, Shaw College, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, and 107 students were awarded the WeCan Scholarships this year.  The Scheme has so far benefitted a total of 337 students since its launch in 2015.

The event was officiated by The Hon Bernard Charnwut Chan, GBS, JP, Convenor of the Non-official Members of the Executive Council, HKSAR and Mr Stephen Ng, Chairman of Project WeCan Committee.  In their speeches, they used their own experience to inspire the awardees and encouraged them to make good use of and enjoy their university life.  Representatives from the 8 UGC-funded tertiary institutions also joined the Ceremony to show their support for the awardees.

2 scholarship recipients also shared their stories at the Ceremony.  Inspired by her secondary school teacher, Crystal Tsang decided to major in Science in university and pursue her dream as a scientist.  She was grateful for her mother who gave her the autonomy of choosing her own path, despite difficult family background.  Drawing from her schools mates’ and friends’ stories, Asif Kainaat revealed the challenges people from ethnic minority (“EM”) groups in Hong Kong face when they seek medical help.  She was determined to become a nurse to serve other EM people in her profession.  Her own experience in pursuing university studies in Hong Kong also prompted university representative to reconsider the undergraduate admission criteria.

At the occasion, members of WeCan Alumni also expressed their gratitude to the teachers, Principals and Project WeCan for the opportunities and support provided all along, with a song and a video which summarized well what they have been through.
