This year, Project WeCan collaborated with The Education University of Hong Kong to launch its first large-scale English WeCan online learning programme, brought together more than 480 junior form students from 66 secondary schools to complete an 100-hour training course in learning 500 English words this summer.

Over 80 local and overseas university students acted as tutors to teach the secondary students in small groups.  With the aim to expand students’ English vocabulary and improve their language ability, different types of online resources have been provided to allow students to learn English online.  Apart from taking online tutorial lessons every day for four weeks, students also joined virtual experiential sessions, and showcasing their learning outcomes among different groups.  Over 20 corporate volunteers from BNP Paribas also joined to support students in their English learning journey.

Representatives from the Partnership Fund for the Disadvantaged of the Social Welfare Department, the Project WeCan Committee members, and over 40 Principals and teachers of WeCan schools had joined the online class visits to show support for students.  An online Grand Finale was held on 22 August 2020 where students showcased their learning outcomes through drama, singing, speech and presentation.  Teachers, parents and guests all enjoyed their performances and were impressed by students’ tremendous improvement.
