For students enrolled in Applied Learning courses, practical experience holds paramount importance. Students from Yan Chai Hospital Lan Chi Pat Memorial Secondary School taking the Pâtisserie and Café Operations course recently managed a café within their school premises. In addition to preparing desserts and beverages, they are also responsible to oversee crucial aspects of café operation like customer service, task delegation, workflow design, and inventory management.
Their clientele extended beyond fellow students and teachers, as volunteers from KPMG patronised the café, providing valuable feedback to the students. Impressed by the students’ dedication and competence, KPMG extended an invitation for them to operate a coffee corner at their Kids’ Day event on 16 August 2024. Here, the families of KPMG staff relished a delightful afternoon filled with refreshments and games. Thrusted into an unfamiliar setting, the students crafted a new operation plan and engaged with a new customer base. They did a splendid job in running the coffee corner, leaving all patrons thoroughly content. Through this unique opportunity at KPMG’s Kids’ Day, the students not only honed their practical skills in café operations, but also gained invaluable real-world experience in customer interaction, adaptability, and teamwork.
