The Roof Garden project of Ng Yuk Secondary School (NYSS)garnered Chairman’s Award of Green Building Award 2014. Initiated by Chan Chai-yuen, the biology teacher at the school in 2006, the roof garden had been developed, built and maintained over the past few years by different cohorts of students with the guidance of Chan.

“We want to create a green environment with plants, to enhance students’ study and quality of life” Chan said. The garden not only beautifies the campus, but also visualises some conceptual theories. “We teach about renewable energy with the help of the facilities in the garden”, he added.

Form 5 student Wong Sze-wai was excited about the Award, “All our effort paid off and we’ll keep up the good
work! The roof garden is not only a laboratory to apply what we learnt in biology lessons, but also a showcase of sustainability concept”, Wong said.
