The Presentation Ceremony took place on 25 November 2023 at the Conference Hall, HKPC Building.  This year’s ceremony recognised both the WeCan Scholarship recipients and awardees of Award WeCan (Mathematics & Physics) – Academic Excellence in HKDSE (“Award”).  A total of 90 students received the WeCan Scholarship, while 22 students received the Award, with 9 students receiving both. The students expressed gratitude to their families, principals, teachers, and WeCan partners for their support during the HKDSE preparation.

Guest speaker Professor Mark Mak, a WeCan school alumnus and the Co-founder and Chief Technology Officer of Roborn Technology, encouraged the students with his experience, “Many things are led by one’s own aspirations and I hope everyone would continue to study hard, embrace challenges, and persist in their dreams.  One day when you are successful, I hope you would extend your love and care to others, and pass on your positive energy by giving back to the community.”

Mr Stephen Ng, Committee Chairman of the Project WeCan Foundation, also encouraged the students to embrace challenges, “The development of generative AI in the past year has brought about revolutionary changes worldwide.  Young people who embrace changes will have a better chance to succeed by making the best use of new technologies to create more possibilities.  I believe that people’s knowledge and skills will not be easily replaced by AI.”

Three WeCan scholars King Chan, Daniel Yim and Jacob Shing shared their personal stories of overcoming challenges and highlighted how the scholarship would benefit them.  The ceremony concluded with the Executive Committee and Alternative Committee members of the WeCan Alumni welcoming the new scholars and awardees through a demonstration of the WeCan Beat to encourage them to actively participate in WeCan programmes and contribute to the community.

WeCan Scholarship Scheme was launched in 2015, benefitting over 800 students so far with a commitment of around HK$60 million.  Award WeCan (Mathematics & Physics) was established in 2018, aiming to reward WeCan students for their outstanding achievements in Mathematics & Physics and related fields, and encourage them to pursue their education in the subjects, as well as provide subsidies for WeCan schools to join cross-boundary competitions.  The Award is divided into two categories: Academic Excellence in HKDSE and Cross-boundary Competition.
